Do you work well under
pressure? Do you enjoy instant gratification? Can you handle rejection? If you
answered yes to these, then a career in public relations might be for you.
Even though it might sound a
bit harsh and intense, public relations is extremely rewarding. There aren’t
many careers that allow you to brainstorm, research and execute a project, and
be involved every step of the way. You're able to take your own ideas and turn
them into reality. The countless hours you put into implementing campaigns and
cups of coffee that helped along the way are all forgotten when you're able sit
back and admire the masterpiece you've created. Take time to enjoy that moment
because before you know it you'll find yourself back at square one, doing it
all over again with another project.
Public relations is a constant
state of mind. Once you get in that mindset, it’s hard to get out. You will
find yourself looking at everything from a PR perspective, questioning why
something was done in a certain way, or questioning what the strategy was
behind it.
That's one of the best things
about the field of PR. It challenges you to think, makes you question things, and
forces you to continually grow and learn.
We all went through the
"why" phase when we were younger—you know, “why is the sky blue? Why
is the grass green? Why do people cheer for Iowa State?” As a public relation
practitioner, you're encouraged to ask those. If you don't care about the
"why" then it just becomes another job. Public relations is anything
but another job, it’s a lifestyle.
All of this brought to you
from an IPR state of mind.
