Pinterest: New Social Media Trend

“Oh I’ve always wanted to make a Mason jar soap dispenser for my country theme bathroom I’m going to personally design when I score my dream job.”  Anyone who has used Pinterest has said something along these lines.  With a record 7 million unique visitors in December, this pin-board social media site is a force to be reckoned with.  This new hot topic is mostly popular among women who are constantly looking for a new recipe or the latest spring color pallet.  Doesn’t seem like this is up your company’s ally? Think again!
No matter what your company, it is a web site to take notice too.   Why?  It allows the consumer to browse a vast amount of products, usually stumbling among items that they did not need or use.  This means great products for them and a new promotional landscape for you.  You can tag links, photos, and videos that relate to what your company’s image and values.  Travel company?  Check out the travel section.  Event planning? The wedding and craft section is a great start.
For any of the guys I just lost, keep reading!  This is a website for you, too.  Depending on your organization, you can target Pinterest around guys by scanning through many of its “guy friendly” sections: humor, travel, men’s attire, sports and technology.  Don’t overlook the opportunities that Pinterest can unveil for your company.   There is some “pin etiquette” to follow for the consumer and the company.

1.  Know your audience:  Create boards that reflect the interest of your audience.  Have a strong understanding of the age, gender, and lifestyle of your audience so you know how to target your pins.

2. Be relevant:  Know what your audience would like to see and utilize so they will follow you and repin your information.  If you are pinning for a gym, make sure to not include photos of unhealthy food or counterproductive activities.

3. Give credit :  A lot of the stuff you will be adding to your pin boards are going to be someone else’s ideas.  Give credit to the author or website in which the product came from.

4. Pin what you are doing:  Pinterest has a convenient “pin” button that you can add to your toolbar on your browsing window.  This allows you to grab an image from any website and add it to one of your pinboards.  This is great to promote current events that your company is doing!

The dramatic popularity growth of Pinterest is record breaking in the social media world.  Embrace this social media revolution that will, for sure, change the way we look at interactive media for years to come.
